Pacific coast beaches

Punta Cometa
costal walk

Mazunte is a small Pacific coast town surrounded by lush hills, sandy beaches and a relaxed atmosphere. With just a couple of main streets, it is full of restaurants, small shops and places to stop for a coffee or pastry. We loved walking around in the evening, while the days were perfect for exploring the coast and hiking to Punta Cometa.

Our Map

This map includes the places we visited during our four nights in Mazunte, from the streets where we stayed to the beaches and coastal spots we explored. We spent our days walking around town, discovering little restaurants and cafés, exploring the coast and hiking to Punta Cometa.

We also included the places and transport points we used when leaving Mazunte towards Puerto Escondido, so you can easily follow the route if you want to travel independently.

We hope this map helps you discover a few good spots around Mazunte and makes planning your stay a little easier.

Restaurants we enjoyed

Oaxaca is one of those cities where you don’t really need a plan to find somewhere good to eat. There are restaurants, small cafés, local food spots and street stalls scattered all around the historic centre, so we often just walked around and saw what caught our attention. During the day, take your time exploring the different markets, where you can find everything from local dishes and snacks to fresh produce and sweets. At night, the streets come alive with different food stalls, making it easy to stop for something to eat as you wander around.

Some streets are busier than others, and sometimes the best thing to do is simply walk without a plan, get a little lost and find your own way around. We tried a mix of local food, tacos, coffee and small places we came across while exploring the city.

Here are three of the places we tried during our stay:

Outdoor cafe with wooden tables and chairs under a canopy, featuring patrons relaxing and browsing on their devices in a tropical setting.
Terraza del Arquitecto

Right in front of the ocean, with great coffee and a lovely view. It is a little more expensive, but you can also stay for a meal.

La Tertulia Mazunte

Right in front of the ocean, we stopped here for some fish tacos and really enjoyed them. A lovely spot to eat while enjoying the view.

Restaurante Luna Nueva

We loved the portions here. The food was really good, the prices were cheap for what you get, and the people were incredibly nice.

Places we stayed

Posada del Centro Mazunte Rinconcito

Central · Simple · Cheap

Posada del Centro Mazunte Rinconcito is right in the heart of Mazunte, which made it really easy for us to walk everywhere and enjoy the town, especially in the evenings. When we stayed, they were doing some renovations during the day, which meant we got the room at a very good price.

It is a very simple place, so don’t expect anything luxurious or particularly fancy. The room was basic, but it had air conditioning, which was definitely appreciated with the coastal heat. For us, it was good enough for what we needed and we enjoyed our stay.

If you are looking for somewhere very central and affordable, and don’t mind a simple room, we think it is a good option. Just keep in mind that renovations were happening when we visited, so the experience may be different now.

MAZUNTE AT OUR OWN PACE

Mazunte is small enough that you don’t really need a plan. We spent our days walking around the main street, exploring the beaches, swimming and stopping at little places for food or coffee. In the evenings, we loved seeing the main street lit up and spending time in the main square, where we watched the FIFA World Cup with everyone.

Beaches and the main street

Mazunte is very easy to explore on foot. There are only a couple of main streets, but they are full of restaurants, cafés, small shops and little places to stop along the way.
During the day, we enjoyed walking between the beaches and exploring the coastline, while in the evening the streets became much livelier, with people heading out for dinner, drinks and a walk around town.
The beaches and surrounding coastline make it easy to spend a whole day without having much of a plan. You can walk, stop for a swim, find somewhere to eat and simply enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. For us, that was part of what made staying four nights in Mazunte feel so nice.

Look up!

We spotted plenty of magnificent frigatebirds all around Mazunte, from the main beach to the coastal walk towards Punta Cometa. They were constantly gliding above the ocean, so you really don’t have to look far to spot them. Keep an eye on the sky while exploring the coast, you might see plenty too.

Punta Cometa Treck

Punta Cometa is the rocky headland at the southern end of Mazunte and one of the places we most enjoyed exploring. The walk takes you away from the main part of town and through a natural trail surrounded by vegetation, with views of the Pacific opening up as you get closer to the point.
Once you reach the headland, you can walk around the rocky area and look back along the coastline from a completely different perspective. The landscape changes as you move around the trail, so it is worth taking your time rather than treating it as a quick walk to one viewpoint.
We really enjoyed having this as part of our days in Mazunte.
It gives you a chance to get away from the streets and beaches for a while and experience the wilder side of the coast.

Would we recommend Mazunte?

Absolutely. We loved Mazunte because we could swim in the ocean, eat lots of really good food and feel comfortable and safe walking around town. It has a very relaxed atmosphere, with calm tourism and a much smaller feel than some of the bigger coastal destinations.

We also loved having everything so close, from the beaches and main street to the restaurants and the walk to Punta Cometa. If you are looking for a chill coastal town with good food, beautiful beaches and a relaxed atmosphere, we would definitely recommend adding Mazunte to your route.
